Judging: Judges’ decisions are final. Judges will look for clear, articulate, and logically organized writing based on entries’ style, content, clarity, and persuasiveness. Winning stories must demonstrate a grasp of the importance of life jacket wear and the “Be a Survivor!” message. Entries will not be judged on punctuation or capitalization. Finalists will be selected based on the above criteria. Survivor stories by finalists may be published nationally in a future edition of the NSBC’s book, Saved By the Jacket. One (1) Grand Prize Winner, one (1) Second Prize Winner, and one (1) Third Prize Winner will be selected. All finalists under eighteen (18) years old will be required to have a parent or guardian sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and liability/publicity release, or else an alternative winner may be selected. By accepting the prize, each winner grants to the NSBC the right to use his or her name, likeness, hometown name, biographical information, and entry for purposes of advertising and promotion without further notice or compensation, except where prohibited by law. Finalists will receive a personal letter of recognition from the NSBC’s Executive Director, and may have their story published in a future edition of Saved By the Jacket. Selected from the finalist pool, one (1) Grand Prize Winner will receive an “Ultimate Survivor” Package; one (1) Second Prize Winner will receive a “Wet’n’Wild” Package; and one (1) Third Prize Winner will receive a “Ship to Shore” Package. All prizes courtesy of West Marine® and must be awarded by December 31, 2008. Any and all taxes, where applicable, are the sole responsibility of the winners. No cash substitutions, transfers, or assignments of prizes are allowed, except by NSBC in case of unavailability, in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded.
Notification: Finalists will be notified by email on or about October 15, 2008. For the names of finalists (available on or around October 15, 2008), email outreach@safeboatingcouncil.org.
